EPIC Energy Seminar: I4Gen- Insight through the Integration of Information for Intelligent Generation

Abstract

I4Gen (Insight through the Integration of Information for Intelligent Generation) is a concept that takes a holistic approach to create a digitally connected and dynamically optimized power plant.  The I4Gen concept will enhance an operating workforce with the use of a digital platform. This digital platform will produce real time information to estimate equipment condition, enhance maintenance, optimize operations, and augment decision making abilities. The connected and integrated digital networks automatically integrate data and produce the information for various systems, functions, analysis, personnel, and actions.

The I4Gen vision requires connectivity and communication between systems, hardware, software, and users. Consequently, it requires an increase in data collection; autonomous data integration; methods for massive data management; the ability to reconfigure data integration and analysis; incorporation of advanced query capabilities; and applications that convert data to actionable intelligence.

Adopting the I4Gen approach in totality will be a large and complex undertaking. In many cases, adoption of selected digital technology platforms and capabilities over time, with short-term ROI and measurable benefits, is a realistic scenario. Near-term development and demonstration opportunities may provide tangible benefits including:

  • Advanced Asset Management through Monitoring and Diagnostics

  • Enhanced Operations and Maintenance through Digital Worker Technologies

  • Improved Information Management and Decision-Making through Data Analytics, Integration and Visualization

  • Quality Data Acquisition through Low-cost Sensor Technologies and Enhanced Sensing Capability

About the speaker
Prayag Parikh is an Engineer/Scientist III at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). His work in EPRI’s fossil generation Instrumentation, Control and Automation program (Program 68) includes projects related to sensors, development of failure mode effect analysis tables, maintenance, monitoring, and diagnostics for various power plant assets. Parikh has also worked in EPRI’s Maintenance Management and Technology program (P69) in exploring, testing and developing electrical equipment monitoring technologies.

Parikh holds Level III vibration analyst and Level II infrared thermography certifications for electrical and mechanical equipment. He earned Bachelors of Engineering Degree from NIT, India and a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from UNC Charlotte.
